Our new Quickstart Templates are the fastest way to get started with iCharts, but building them wasn’t easy. Because iCharts delivers business intelligence without extracting your data and installs right into your NetSuite ERP, we faced some unique challenges.

Every company’s processes are different, so every NetSuite instance has at least some customization. The templates needed to be flexible enough to work in most NetSuite instances, without sacrificing performance or depth.

So, how’d we do it? Through years of experience with NetSuite customers, we noticed that even the most customized NetSuite environments shared certain record types. With few exceptions, most NetSuite instances have transactions, opportunities, and cases. We studied how people use these common record types and compared it to industry best practices. After a bunch of research, and even more tinkering, we had what we needed to develop templates for saved searches and charts.

QuickStart templates are easy to install, and they populate with data almost immediately. They’re also easy to customize, so you can incorporate more specific or custom data. In other words, these templates are more than a quick way to get up and running.

Let’s go through a few of these templates and see this flexibility in action. If you’re unfamiliar with how iCharts works, it might be a good idea to watch our demo video first.

Blog Quickstart Template

Let’s start with a sales chart based on our Master Opportunity Saved Search. This chart uses the “Sales Rep” field to group bookings by sales rep. It also uses the “Projected Total” field to measure bookings dollars, and the “Opportunity Status” field (or {entitystatus} field for you NetSuite geeks out there) to break down the bookings into stages in the sales pipeline.

A quick way to make this chart even more awesome is to bring it into our studio and add some filters. Use fields from our “Master Opportunity Saved Search” template or throw in your own custom fields or formulas using the “Create Formula Field” button. For example, a “Forecast Category,” or “Customer” field can add some valuable segmentation possibilities.

The sales templates come with several more date fields than most NetSuite records. Options like “Date Created,” “Expected Close,” or “Actual Close,” help you get the precise data you’re looking for.

Next, let’s take a look at one of our case-based templates, “Case Status by Agent.”

This chart uses the “Assigned To” field to show who owns the support cases while using “Status” as a comparison to show how the cases are progressing.

Some great fields to apply as filters include:

  • Type: See what kind of cases people are working on.
  • Customer: Select a high profile customer and check if they’re having problems.
  • Priority: Find high priority cases and see who’s working on them.

Additionally, a more advanced user could create an “Average Close Time” formula in the studio, use it as a measure, then select “Average” for the aggregation to see the average time it takes to close a case.

Now let’s run through one of our transaction-based templates. “P&L by Quarter” is a great example.

By default, this chart shows the revenue, expenses, gross profit, and net profit for each quarter. These measures are the result of formulas that come as part of our Master Transaction Search. If you want to filter your P&L by location, use the “Location” field. You can also filter by time with fields like Year, Year Month, Quarter, Month, Week, Day of Year, and more. They’re all available in our Master Transaction search. As you add filters, it may also make sense to display your data on a pivot table rather than a column chart.

Altogether, iCharts includes 19 QuickStart templates. We designed every template with adjustment in mind, so it’s easy to customize a template for your business needs. Once you’ve edited the template to your liking, click “Save As” to keep your settings intact.
